Walker West’s new Women in Jazz Combo for the 2023 season features Twin CIties-based young women and non-binary musicians, led by leading women jazz artists, Katia Cardenas (Vocals) Victoria Hopwood (Bass), Lucia Sarmiento (Sax and Flute) and Glory Yard (Drums). Performing songs and arrangements by jazz greats John Coltrane, Robert Glasper, Herbie Hancock, Snarky Puppy, Irving Berlin and more, this inspiring group showcases the talent and fortitude of the next generation of jazz players, while providing visibility for young women in the Twin Cities jazz community. This group was formed as part of Walker West’s Women in Jazz Initiative, which is focused on addressing the gender gap in jazz, and providing safe spaces for women, non-binary and trans players to experience #jazzwithoutpatriarchy, a movement being led by the Institute for Jazz and Gender Justice at Berklee College of Music. Jeffrey Merrill is a swinging and entertaining young piano player.
