But it is much more than that. It’s not just imitation. It’s a group of musicians that truly love Peter Gabriel’s work and strive to honor his music with a meticulous attention to detail. The group was initially conceived by Twin Cities musicians that have played continuously together in various projects for the past 30 years Drummer/programmer Doug Christianson\, keyboardist Dave Alstead\, and vocalist Will Jacobsen (ThinMen) have several musical influences that had shaped their music – but the one common thread between them\, is the music of Peter Gabriel. The search was on for other musicians that shared their same passion. Matt McIntyre (bass) and Kent Militzer (guitar) were the perfect fit. Matt brings the feel and sound of Tony Levin – Peter’s long-time bass player. Kent captures the esoteric beauty and sonic fullness of David Rhodes =Peter’s long-time guitar player. Steph Devine (vocalist) brings the voice and stage presence needed for Peter Gabriel tribute. \n\n\n\nPG13 has performed in many popular Minneapolis venues such as Crooners\, Icehouse\, The Hook & Ladder\, Bunker’s\, and The Cabooze. They have also played at the Rochester Civic Theatre Black Box in Rochester\, MN. \n\n\n\nWhether the venue is a theatre – or a more intimate space\, PG13’s lead vocalist\, Will\, has a penchant for leaving the stage and interacting with the audience – bringing a unique drama and personality to the performance that they will not forget. Together\, these six deliver a concert experience that is nothing less than genuine and authentically Peter Gabriel \n\n\n\n\nRegister on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShare this:TwitterFacebookLike this:Like Loading... Influenced by his dad’s classic country record collection and modern Americana bands like The Flatlanders\, the band mixes folk\, bluegrass and country music with a raw\, rock edge. Born in Chicago\, Sumanth’s family relocated to Slidell\, Louisiana when he was nine. “At first\, my brother and I hated the place. We consciously decided not to adopt southern accents\, but we were of course surrounded by them\, and by contemporary country music\,” he recalls. Later\, as a grad student at Yale he fell under the musical mentorship of fellow graduate student and Chapel Hill\, North Carolina country/bluegrass veteran Rob Slifkin\, who introduced him to the music of classic Americana artists. Sumanth’s songwriting quickly blossomed in country music—a genre he’d shunned since his days in Slidell. “Playing a form of country and getting to ‘play southern’ became a form of therapy\, a way of dealing with all of the unpleasant bullying\, racism\, and social dislocation that I experienced while growing up in Louisiana.” In 2005\, Sumanth moved from New Haven to Minneapolis to begin working as a professor of music theory at the University of Minnesota. There he would meet fellow faculty members and grad students with whom he would form The Gated Community – a delightfully raucous country band whose lively shows and pointed social commentary quickly gained a cult following in the Twin Cities. Although the band began as a vehicle for Sumanth’s frequently political songs\, the band has evolved over the last 17 years\, expanding in size and scope to include many roots music styles and more personal songwriting. The band’s current lineup includes five singers\, all of whom take turns as lead vocalist on their new album The Honor and Glory of The Gated Community. An eclectic mix of musicians\, the band combines professors like Sumanth (vocals\, acoustic guitar\, keyboards) and Beth Hartman (vocals\, percussion)\, and artists from various parts of the Twin Cities scene like Rosie Harris (vocals\, cello)\, Paul Hatlelid (vocals\, drums\, acoustic guitar)\, Cody Johnson (bass)\, and Nate Knutson (vocals\, guitars\, mandolin). About the interesting mix of people in the band\, Sumanth says “Even though I have strong social ties to the academic world\, I don’t like hanging out only with academics. I prefer to work with people from all walks of life—whether they be union organizers\, office workers\, or full-time artists.” Although the band members’ interests are indeed varied (kids\, dogs\, photography\, books\, cooking\, community organizing)\, they all love music\, travel and exploring historic sights while on the road. Summing up the band’s commitment to being a band of and for the people\, The Gated Community continues to stay true to its mission – to pursue the ideals of the American dream as expressed and embodied in the form of country music. \n\n\n\n\nRegister on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShare this:TwitterFacebookLike this:Like Loading... Lyrically they lean towards the Country storyteller\, while musically\, they swing from Bluegrass’ish\, Country\, Southern Rock to fuzzy Blues. \n\n\n\nLogan Springer and The Wonderfully Wild’s Midwest background informs their mission to make a style of music that is uniquely Midwestern. Springer felt like an observer\, never feeling accepted or part of the story where he was raised. Because of that\, he focuses on how he imagines people from his area feel and talk\, getting the manner of speech correct to the Midwest. \n\n\n\nThe group’s influences range from Neil Young to John Steinbeck\, with songs that tell the story of the Midwest – storms crossing the plains\, long\, painful winters\, backwoods hideouts\, and searching for a place to call home. These themes arise from Springer’s upbringing on a share crop farm in rural central Illinois\, where the struggles and beauties impact the imagery and stories within their songs. Springer’s main inspiration comes from his raising and trying to understand why people from where he’s from do what they do and why they make the decisions they make\, right or wrong. By capturing the everyday lives of Americans\, he attempts to turn the mundane into something interesting. Springer says\, “I believe we as a society overlook some amazing stories because they’re not shiny or fancy enough for people to care. Life is beautiful and tragic all the time. Pain is pain; it’s all relative.” \n\n\n\n\nRegister on Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShare this:TwitterFacebookLike this:Like Loading... Formerly known as My One and Only\, the duo has reimagined their “southern-soul\,” “curious-grit” and emotionally honest lyrics into Americana act\, Goldpine. Having released their self-produced debut LP\, One last year\, they’re gearing up to deliver their second full-length record\, Two — set for release on Friday\, September 8. \n\n\n\nAfter nearly a decade of honing in on their sound\, and evolving their music\, the name didn’t necessarily grow along with it. “We were called My One and Only for about 5 years\,” the two explain. “Throughout those years we realized that the name was putting out a certain vibe\, of the depth of the music\, that was not quite accurate with where our style was heading.” Drawing inspiration from their roots\, the name Goldpine signifies their past and their future; Kassie grew up on Pines Road in Alabama\, so ‘pine’ represents the past and ‘gold’ is the lasting and valuable element that represents the future. \n\n\n\nGoldpine returns with ‘Two’ and continues to waste no time showing what they stand for. Their lead single\, “Do You Have Me\,” showcases Kassie’s powerhouse of a voice. Starting out slow\, the song cycles through a pattern of harmonious verses and a commanding chorus\, ultimately building to an instrumental interlude of southern electric guitars and a rhythmic tambourine. “The song speaks to the hurt of a person inside a one-sided friendship\,” explains Ben. “We all know that people can be involved in friendships for many different and opposing reasons. This particular friendship is coming to a head\, after the realization that one person is only in it for themselves.” \n\n\n\nThe sophomore single of ‘Two’\, “Thinking About Love\,” features the steel guitar for a more country-leaning sound. “The song came to life over the last year\, as I had really been pondering the true meaning of love in our lives. I have used the word love in so many different contexts\, but I realized that many of those were selfish in nature\,” Ben admits. “For instance\, I’ll ‘love’ someone if they make me feel good…but honest love is when we act on behalf of someone else’s best interest\, despite whether we get anything in return or not. I wanted to explore my distorted view of the definition of ‘love\,’ and bring us all back to its original intention.” \n\n\n\nTwo is about real people and real situations\, told through candid and passionate songwriting. “I want people to come away from this album and take an honest look at themselves\,” Ben remarks. “An honest look at motives. An honest look at connections with other people. An honest look at tragic events that are happening throughout the world\, and an honest look at how we use the time we’ve been given.” Exposing the pains of severed relationships and unearthing the pursuits of love and purpose\, Goldpine is cathartic\, moody\, dissonant and relevant\, all intertwined into one. \n\n\n\nTouring since 2016\, they have been lessening the gap between music and the audience by disclosing their stories behind the lyrics at every venue along the way. From Kerrville Folk Fest main stage and 30A Songwriters Festival to listening rooms throughout the United States\, Ben and Kassie have been offering their own brand of raw Americana to audiences large and small. Having been recent winners of the 2022 Rocky Mountain Songwriter Contest at the Red Lodge Songwriter Festival\, Goldpine continues to stay true to their vision from the beginning\, and stands out while doing so. Presented the “Discovery Award” in 2018 by acclaimed music critic Robert K. Oermann (MusicRow Magazine)\, the duo’s bold harmonies are clearly a channel for their highly charged songwriting. \n\n\n\nGoldpine is set to perform their debut AMERICANAFEST showcase this September amongst a summer full of shows throughout the country. \n\n\n\nWith an incredible collection of stories about life and love\, ‘Two’ is a powerful projection of everything Goldpine is about: striking vocals\, bold harmony\, and introspection into the human experience. \n\n\n\n‘Two’ is slated for release on Friday\, September 8\, 2023. \n\n\n\n“I love these guys…their never-ending onslaught of bold harmony is undeniable.” Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes)\, Grammy Award-nominated producer. \n\n\n\n“…a melding of raw acoustic music with meaningful lyrics that paint a picture of their and our journey.” -Eric Dahl\, host of Fox 17 Rock & Review Radio & TV \n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShare this:TwitterFacebookLike this:Like Loading...
