DESCRIPTION:​Growing up in a small Wisconsin town isn’t always limiting as it sounds. An eclectic musician\, Bentz totes history with the violin\, oboe\, saxophone\, guitar\, and bass. Putting all of this musical knowledge together to start a band for the first time in high school\, Bentz’s love of music would give him the flexibility to perform in rock\, classical\, jazz\, blues\, bluegrass and jam bands. When asked for his resume\, Bentz’s list goes on… \n\n\n\nHis sound gives credence to this fact the many faces and different genres of music have allowed him to create his own sound: one that blends ideals from many flavors of music into one (kind of like at the ice cream store he managed as a teen). The distinct movement\, layering\, and syncopation of his style\, though intense\, is immediately accessible to the listener. Some may say that Tommy Bentz’s greatest asset is his confident and mature electric slide guitar style\, yet others will argue that his insightful lyrics and adept layering of sound are what keep them coming back to hear him play again and again. Regardless\, with three full length albums under his belt – each of them a landmark of musical growth in a coming of age fashion\, Tommy Bentz represents a man with spirit\, drive\, thoughtful journeys\, and musical ability that so many musicians strive to achieve. \n\n\n\n​While reading his lyrics\, one gets a snapshot of Bentz’s ideals – from the strength he derives from family relationships\, to the all-important issue of respect in this changing world. We read and are left with an impression of a man who learns from where he’s been\, uses the knowledge and presses forward into the unknown with purpose. If lyrics alone drove Bentz’s work\, he’d have a great product\, but no one can discount the musicians technical prowess or his warm timbre and soulful vocals. While under the continued tutelage of such Twin Cities jazz greats as Kevin Washington\, Ted Olsen\, and Kavy Kaviraj\, he began playing bass professionally at the age of 14 and has now played many shows throughout the cities as both a leader and sideman. With the intangible Gabe “Old Man” Hartnett on saxophone\, the incredible Xavier Johnson-Ryan on keyboards\, and the masterful Ataa Mensah on drums\, this quartet flows effortlessly between the traditional jazz diaspora and the stylings of hip hop\, funk\, and jazz fusion\, playing with complex harmonic and rhythmic concepts as well. Sure enough\, a few weeks later\, a guitar was shipped to the family’s front steps from the country music icon. Adam grew up riding in his dad’s ‘98 Toyota 4-runner where the radio was always turned to real country music on 106.1 BOBFM. \n\n\n\nBut it wasn’t until 2020 where Adam Brandt made his recording debut. Adam spent 2021 playing shows and finding his brand of country music. I remember having read Russian children’s stories\, Sri Lankan Buddhist tales\, old Indian parables and of course\, Aesop’s Fables. My mother was keen about the way I told these stories\, whether on stage at elocutions\, or to friends. The hero’s journey\, the allegory\, the imagery: I look back on how much that influenced my creativity. I have always found the magic of storytelling within the way I talk\, I find it within my teaching and in the way I write music.Fables is my first original jazz quintet through which I present my original compositions I’ve been harboring. This project is 7 or more years in the making\, and my desire to tell original stories through music is finally fulfilled. Every song in this concert is like a fable; every song is a story\, and every story has a moral. I’ve woven these songs in my own musical language\, in the way that I’ve discovered that music meets my life’s stories. I write about my experiences as an immigrant\, about not knowing where to call home\, about our collective humanity and our ability to do good. Often I realize when I discover a musical idea\, the notes and the chords are already portraying a story of mine through song. Employing modern harp techniques\, loop and electric pedals\, her songs sit somewhere between the old folk bedrock of Joan Baez\, the musical innovation of Joni Mitchell\, and the influential pop stylings of Billie Eilish and Taylor Swift. Nikki artfully shapes the music to her words\, creating a sound that refuses to adhere to any one particular genre\, somehow feeling old and new at the same time. Coming of the 2020 release of his album\, The Fire and The Medicine\, he formed his full band comprised of drummer Greg Schutte (Mickey Hart\, Ryan Bingham) lap steel/electric guitarist Dan Schwartz\, keyboardist Kevin Gamble and bassist Nick Salisbury (Ryan Bingham\, Brian Fallon). \n\n\n\nThe new album\, Transient will be released December 15th. It was recorded this past winter in Eli’s home studio. It is comprised of intimate\, hushed songs that showcase the depth of his writing. His mom played flute and piano and his dad classical guitar. Music was always on\, James Taylor\, Jim Croce\, and Bonnie Raitt would be playing as dinner was made and the dishes were washed. From a young age he pursued his first passion though\, hockey\, not starting to write songs until he was out of high school. “I remember sitting in my room trying to learn chords on my dad’s old nylon string guitar\, he had a song book and I think the first song I learned was House of The Rising Sun.” Shortly after\, he recorded the first songs he wrote on a 4 track Tascam tape recorder. “I still have some of those old notebooks I wrote those old songs in” Eli states. Moving to Minneapolis was a turning point for his music career. \n\n\n\nEli’s music is always changing\, morphing to the mood and groove. It can be described as Americana or Rock\, but the themes are deeply rooted in our lives in present day\, what it means to be a human and to be sympathetic to other people.
